The Kano State House of Assembly yesterday began impeachment proceedings against the Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo.
The move followed a petition by the State Executive Council to the lawmakers against Gwarzo over allegations of corruption during his tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs between 2023 and 2024.
The deputy governor had parted ways with the governor, Abba Yusuf, after his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Despite the entreaties by his boss, Gwarzo, a loyalist of the NNPP leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has insisted thst he would not defect.
The 38 lawmakers who signed the impeachment notice accused the deputy governor of receiving N1.6 billion from local government chairmen.
According to them, the alleged corrupt practice smacked of gross misconduct, abuse of office and breach of public trust.
Presenting the notice at plenary, the Assembly said it was in accordance with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The office of the deputy governor, who is yet to respond to the allegations was locked yesterday. He was given two weeks to respond to the allegations.
The Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini, who presented the notice, alleged that Gwarzo collected N66 million per month, amounting to N462 million in seven months.

He also alleged that between February and July 2024, the deputy governor received N726 million under the guise of executing special assignments for the councils.
Gwarzo was also accused of facilitating the release of N440 million from the 44 local government to Novomed Pharmaceuticals Limited in violation of state procurement and fiscal management l.
Hussaini said: “These actions are said to constitute gross misconduct under Section 188(2) of the Constitution, representing serious breaches of constitutional norms and ethical standards for public office holders.
“Based on the evidence presented, Abdulsalam should be impeached and removed from office in accordance with constitutional procedures.”
