Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has received a three-man shortlist for the position of deputy governor from APC Legacy Stakeholders, following the exit of former Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo.
Gwarzo resigned on March 27, 2026, amid impeachment proceedings triggered by disagreements with the governor over party affiliations.
The stakeholders, led by Magaji Umar Gwammaja, nominated Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi, Rt. Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, and Hon. Murtala Sule Garo as potential replacements.
Among the nominees, Bichi is widely regarded as a leading contender, given his extensive administrative experience across state and federal levels.
He previously served as Managing Director of the Urban Development Bank of Nigeria and the Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA), as well as commissioner and Secretary to the State Government (SSG) under two administrations.
He currently serves as Managing Director of the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority (HJRBDA).
Gwammaja said: "Dr. Bichi is a nominee of exceptional maturity and experience, possessing a rare trifecta of leadership across state and federal sectors.”
"His profile is noted for the age, academic credentials, and administrative sagacity required for this exalted position."
Rurum brings legislative clout, having served three terms in the Kano State House of Assembly and currently representing Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure in the National Assembly.
Garo, despite facing litigation for alleged corruption, has a strong track record as a political administrator, having served as commissioner in the immediate past administration.
The nominees will undergo a security vetting process in Abuja, and upon clearance, Governor Yusuf will present them to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for guidance before forwarding the final pick to the Kano State House of Assembly for confirmation, the Legacy said.
