Abba Yusuf has forwarded the name of Murtala Sule Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as deputy governor.
Garo, who is also the son-in-law of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, was nominated following the vacancy created by Aminu Gwarzo's March 27, 2026, resignation.
Gwarzo’s exit came amid political tensions with the governor, following the state assembly's initiation of impeachment proceedings against him over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, breach of public trust, and financial malfeasance.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Yusuf said the nomination aligns with constitutional provisions.
“The nomination is in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the Governor to nominate a Deputy Governor where a vacancy exists,” the statement read.

The governor noted that the decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders and urged the Assembly to approve the nomination.
Describing Garo as an experienced political administrator, Yusuf highlighted his more than two decades of service in various roles, including State Organizing Secretary, Special Adviser to the governor, Chairman of Kabo Local Government, Chairman of ALGON Kano, and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
Garo also served as the APC’s deputy governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections.
According to the governor, the nomination aims to strengthen governance and ensure continuity of effective service delivery in the state.
