Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is set to lead discussions on national cohesion. He will attend a major peace-building and award conference scheduled for tomorrow in Lagos.

The summit, taking place under the theme, “Building a Fractured Nation: The imperative of peace, harmony and justice in Nigeria,” is organised by the Nigerian Human Rights Community. Nearly 1,000 delegates from across the country are expected, including civil society, faith-based, and community leaders.

The organisers aim to rebuild trust across regional and ethnic divides and foster collaboration on shared national interests between northern and southern stakeholders.

Yusuf, who is the special guest of honour, will deliver an address. Organisers cited his invitation as recognition of his peace-building efforts and role in fostering stability in Kano, a state long associated with ethnic and religious tensions.

They noted that recent years have seen a decline in violent clashes in Kano. They attribute this to deliberate policies focused on inclusion and investments in health, education and infrastructure that cut across religious and ethnic lines.

The event will also feature a keynote address by Ayo Opadokun, a former National Secretary, National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), who will speak on the role of democratic ideals in sustaining peace and national unity.

In a joint statement signed by Martins Adeleke, Kudu Abubakar and Akinwale Kasali, the NHRC described the convergence of Lagos and Kano interests as symbolic and historically significant. The group noted that Kano is the most populous state in Northern Nigeria. Lagos holds the same distinction nationally, with both serving as melting pots of diverse ethnic groups.
