When Mrs Hafsatu Yusuf delivered of quintuplets in Kano on Wednesday, it was a joyful moment that attracted the state government that promised to take responsibility for the babies medical care.

But no sooner than the quintuplets were celebrated as a “rare and remarkable medical achievement,” than a sorrowful shroud descended upon Hafsatu’a family and by extension the entire state.

The mother’s life was tragically cut short, leaving behind a legacy of five tiny lives that will forever bear the weight of her absence.

Authorities confirmed that the woman died from “severe postpartum bleeding” despite efforts by medical personnel to save her life.

According to the spokesman for the state Ministry of Health, Nabilusi Na’isa, the five babies are three boys and two girls.

Na’isa even assured that the babies were receiving “specialised medical attention” alongside their mother at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital. The husband, Salisu Nufi’u, a tricycle rider, revealed that it was his wife’s ninth delivery.

A previous delivery produced twins.

Without an inkling of the tragedy that would befall shortly, Nufi’u had even expressed gratitude to the state government for the timely intervention, while hailing his wife for adding five babies to the family.

The quintuplets, born into a world now devoid of their mother’s love, cling to life in the sterile warmth of the hospital facility.

Their mother, a brave soul who defied the odds to bring them into this world, succumbed to the cruel whims of fate, leaving behind a family shattered by grief.

The hours preceding her passing were marked by hope and joy, as she welcomed her five precious babies, only to be met with the darkness of despair.

As news of her passing spread, the hospital became crowded with loved ones and strangers alike gathering to mourn the loss of a life given in the purest act of sacrifice.

The quintuplets, fragile and innocent, remain under the watchful eyes of medical guardians, their fate hanging precariously.

In Kano, many awaited with bated breath, praying for their tiny hearts to thrive.

Speaking on the tragedy, Nabulusi said a medical team acted swiftly to manage complications arising after Hafsatu’s childbirth but were unable to prevent the fatal outcome.

He noted that postpartum hemorrhage remains one of the leading causes of maternal mortality, particularly in high-risk deliveries such as multiple births.

He however, assured that the quintuplets were in stable condition and responding well to medical care under close supervision by healthcare professionals.

“The babies are receiving the necessary attention to ensure their survival and healthy development,” he said.

The state government yesterday expressed condolences to the bereaved family and called on the public to offer prayers for the deceased.

The government also pledged continued support for the newborns, assuring that necessary measures will be taken to cater for their welfare during this difficult period.
