Britain’s monarch, King Charles III, surprised guests at a state banquet held at Windsor Castle by delivering parts of his speech in multiple Nigerian languages while hosting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other dignitaries.
The King opened his remarks in Yoruba, saying, “Ẹ káàbọ̀, ṣé dáadáa ni” (Welcome, how are you?), a gesture that drew laughter and applause from attendees.

He also referenced a Yoruba proverb on unity, an Igbo saying about knowledge, and a Hausa idiom highlighting change, showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity.
Bringing his speech to a lively close, the monarch switched to Nigerian Pidgin English, declaring, “Naija No Dey Carry Last!”—a line that sparked loud reactions across the hall.
The banquet formed part of Nigeria’s historic state visit to the United Kingdom, the first of its kind in 37 years.
In his address, King Charles III further praised Nigeria’s global influence, describing it as a major economic and cultural force, while acknowledging the long-standing historical ties between both countries.
