Kogi State Health Commissioner, Dr. Adeiza Abdulazeez said yesterday that over 150 Primary Care Health Centres were being renovated across the state.

He added that many residents  were being enrolled in health insurance scheme for access to quality care.

The commissioner made this known at a press conference in Lokoja after a health walk to commemorate the World Health Day.

He emphasised the need for “unity in science-driven healthcare from disease prevention and control to improved diagnostics and treatment.”

The commissioner noted that the theme of the event, which is “Together for health, stand with science,” emphasised science-backed health approaches.

Abdulazeez stated that science remained the foundation of progress in health, from disease prevention and control to improved diagnostics and treatment.

The commissioner emphasised that collaboration across sectors, disciplines, and communities is key to advancing healthcare.

Abdulazeez highlighted the state’s efforts in strengthening its health system through evidence-based policies, improved data management, and strategic partnerships.

He mentioned the state’s commitment to primary healthcare revitalisation, health insurance expansion, and healthcare infrastructure investment.

Abdulazeez acknowledged challenges such as access to quality healthcare in rural areas, human resource gaps, and disease burdens.

He called on stakeholders to strengthen partnerships between government, academia, and communities; promote trust in science and counter misinformation.

He stressed the need to support local research and innovation, and ensure that scientific advancements benefit citizens

The commissioner reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to building a resilient, inclusive, and responsive health system, prioritising primary healthcare and empowering healthcare workers.

The state Epidemiologist, Dr Austin Ojotule, said the event aimed to create awareness about health needs and promote healthy living.

“We need collaboration to ensure science works for healthy living,” Ojotule added.

Mr Hamza Aliyu, KONGONET Chairperson, said the event raises awareness on public health issues, emphasizing science-based planning.

“We need to move away from local unverified methods and understand that health is driven by science,” he noted, citing myths and misconceptions around immunization and COVID-19.

Events to mark the event also included campaigns, health walk, screenings for blood sugar, hypertension, eye health, and TB.

Stakeholders’ and partners for the event included the state Ministry of Health, Kogi Primary Health Care Development Agency (KSPHCDA), World Health Organisation (WHO), Nigerian Red Cross, Sightsavers, and non-governmental organisations.
