A football initiative aimed at supporting underprivileged young footballers has launched in Lagos, with its inaugural event combining a charity match and an exhibition game for youth players.
The convener, Samuel Iyanuoluwa Oyefade, said the project was inspired by his own childhood experiences, when a lack of equipment and support curtailed his passion for football.

The initiative, billed as a first of its kind within Nigeria's Christian community, featured a charity football match at Alao-Akala Bashorun Park in Gbagada on Tuesday.
Gospel artistes defeated a team of comedians and masters of ceremonies (MCs) 5–4 in a closely contested encounter, with Sultan scoring a hat-trick to seal the win for his side.
The match formed the centrepiece of the inaugural Wavy Charity Tournament, designed to support young footballers lacking access to resources and opportunities. Proceedings opened with an exhibition game featuring 13 youngsters drawn from different parts of Lagos, who displayed notable enthusiasm and skill despite limited facilities.

Backed by sponsors including Alhaji Fatiu Olohunlambe, Adeoye Omolara, Cway, Karebi Marlen and Anita Amos, the initiative seeks to combine sport with social outreach.

"Wavy Charity Tournament will not only revive a sense of fun in the Christian community, it will also serve as a platform where talented footballers can find new opportunities," Oyefade said.
On the pitch, the gospel artistes featured performers such as Adeshina Sax, Olabest, Dare Oxygen, Dare Justify and Mike Abdul, while the MCs side included AsiriComedy, MC OJB and Sceed Barms. The gospel artistes were coached by Mista Olamilekan and Testimony Jaga, with Coach Gaga handling the MCs.
Commentary from MC Slimtea and MC Kajoe added spark to the occasion, drawing reactions from spectators throughout the event.
Despite the narrow defeat, members of the MCs team called for a rematch, with discussions around the tournament continuing on social media after the final whistle.
Organisers said the tournament would serve as an ongoing platform to promote community engagement and youth development through sport.
