The Lagos State Government on Friday expanded its Eko Cares health outreach to officers of the Nigeria Police Force, with a target of reaching at least one thousand beneficiaries across the command.

The exercise, held at the Lagos Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja, marked the first time the programme was extended to security personnel after earlier rounds focused on commercial drivers and transport workers across the state.

Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation and Logistics, Adekoya Hasan, said the decision to include the police followed the directive of Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu, who insisted that frontline security personnel deserved improved access to health support.

Hasan said the outreach was designed to complement ongoing welfare efforts by the Inspector General of Police and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police.

He noted that the state government recognised the weight of responsibilities borne by police officers in maintaining order in a fast paced state like Lagos.

Under the programme, officers received free medical checks including eye screening, blood pressure tests and blood sugar assessments.

Those diagnosed with vision problems were issued prescription glasses at no cost. Four mobile testing points were set up at the venue to manage the large turnout.

Some officers who spoke with reporters expressed appreciation to the state government.

Inspector Bello Adewale said he only discovered the extent of his vision difficulty during the screening. He added that the prescribed glasses had already improved his clarity.

Superintendent Yabo Obarasha also praised the intervention. She said she had been planning to seek medical help but had been constrained by work demands until the free test came to her doorstep.
