...advances monetization of climate and circular economy actions

The Lagos State Government, through the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy (OCCE) gathered on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 at Federal Palace Hotel bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and sustainability professionals to an high-level engagement focused on advancing how businesses translate climate and circular economy actions into measurable financial value.

The event EcoNexus 3.0 under the theme: “Beyond Compliance: Monetizing Climate & Circular Actions for Industries.” delivered a powerful platform for cross-sector dialogue, spotlighting how organizations can move beyond climate action as a compliance requirement to positioning sustainability as a core business strategy.

With a strong focus on value creation, EcoNexus 3.0 emphasized the importance of measuring, interpreting, and communicating sustainability impact in ways that unlock economic and strategic benefits.

Delivering the welcome address, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Titilayo Oshodi, highlighted the critical gap between sustainability action and value realization across industries.

“Across sectors, organizations are already taking climate and circularity actions unique to their operations. The real question is: how do we measure this impact accurately, verify it credibly, and convert it into real economic value?” she stated.

But she emphasised that some of these initiatives have remained invincible, unverified and unmonietized, adding: “That is the gap that we are here to close.”

Credible verification, she added, entails structuring data in a way that meets global standards such as the GHG Protocol, IFRS S2, and TCFD, making sustainability efforts auditable, transparent, and globally recognised.

EcoNexus 3.0 featured an exceptional lineup of speakers, including Oshunniyi Abiola, Global Development Strategist, ESG Expert & Governance Advisor who stressed in his presentation that ESG value is not created in reports, but, rather, created when data, decisions, and systems align across sectors.

ESG, according to him, is the cost of staying in business, and monetizing it is the competitive advantage.

Funke Shobanjo, Chief Operating Officer, FBNQuest Merchant Bank, is of the view that sustainability has moved: from compliance to capital allocation, from reporting to revenue potential, and from participation to value capture.

According to her, value is not being captured because it is neither structured, measured, nor monetised.

In attendance was the Honourable Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Ope George, who emphasized Lagos State’s commitment to enabling industries to unlock financial value through sustainability.

He said: “Lagos State is setting the stage for industries to unlock financial value while contributing to environmental sustainability. By monetizing reductions in emissions, optimizing resource use, and integrating circular practices into operations, businesses can transform what was previously seen as compliance into revenue and strategic advantage.

"Our planning and budgeting efforts are designed to make these opportunities transparent, accountable, and investable, allowing Lagos to remain a national and continental leader in sustainable development.”

EcoNexus 3.0 convened a diverse group of participants, including captains of industry, representatives from academia, the private sector, FMCG, telecommunications, financial institutions, construction, and sustainability and ESG professionals.

The event also recorded strong participation from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of the Lagos State Government.

A key outcome of the engagement was a strengthened alignment between government and industry on the need to build systems that enable organizations to capture, verify, and monetize sustainability data, while positioning Lagos as a hub for green finance, ESG investment, and circular economy innovation.

With EcoNexus 3.0, Lagos State continues to demonstrate leadership in shaping the future of climate action, one that integrates economic growth, environmental responsibility, and global competitiveness.
