The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has started an investigation into the collapse of a four-storey building housing a private school in Aguda, Ogba, Lagos.

The structure, which accommodated Yemco Daycare Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College on Adu Street, collapsed on Monday shortly after pupils and teachers were evacuated from the premises following the discovery of the structural defects.

Officials said the occupants were hurriedly moved out of the building after cracks were noticed on the structure, which raised fears of an imminent collapse.

Eyewitnesses said the building caved in about three minutes after the evacuation, averting what residents described as a potential tragedy.

Some pupils reportedly sustained minor injuries during the hurried evacuation and were taken to hospital for treatment.

The Director of Public Affairs, LASBCA, Adu Ademuyiwa, confirmed the probe, adding that the building also had residential occupants and collapsed shortly after their evacuation.

Ademuyiwa added that the agency had sealed off the premises while structural assessments were being carried out on adjoining buildings to ensure their safety.

“As a precautionary measure, occupants of nearby structures have been advised to temporarily vacate their buildings while integrity tests are conducted to determine their structural stability,” he said.
