The Lagos state government has taken delivery of a new set of 24 car trains to strengthen operations on the Lagos Red Line and expand capacity in order to improve commuter experience along the corridor.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the additional rolling stock would enhance service delivery and reduce waiting time for passengers, as the state deepens investment in rail based transportation.

“We have received a new set of 24 car trains to strengthen the Lagos Red Line fleet. This will improve capacity, reduce wait times and make daily commuting easier for Lagosians. We remain focused on building a transport system that is efficient and reliable for everyone,” the governor said.

The Red Line, which was inaugurated in February 2024, is a 37 kilometre rail corridor stretching from Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo on Lagos Island axis. The line runs through key districts including Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin and Yaba, providing a critical mass transit alternative across some of the state’s busiest urban routes.

Designed as part of Lagos’ broader rail master plan, the Red Line shares right of way with the Nigerian Railway Corporation standard gauge track and connects with the Lagos Blue Line at key interchanges, reinforcing the state’s vision of an integrated multimodal transport system.

Since its launch, the corridor has witnessed increasing patronage, driven by rising demand for faster and more predictable alternatives to road travel in a city long burdened by traffic congestion.

The development is part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority to expand rail services and extend connectivity to more communities. Plans are underway to further extend the Red Line beyond its current terminals and integrate it with bus rapid transit and water transport systems.
