Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) and Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening inclusion and accessibility for persons with disabilities (PWDs) within the state’s transportation system.

General Manager of LASODA, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, made the call during a visit to the headquarters of LAMATA in Ojota.

She hailed LAMATA for the prompt response of its workers to issues affecting PWDs and for the agency’s sustained interventions aimed at promoting inclusion across its transport services.

The visit, she said, was part of an ongoing assessment of accessibility compliance, championed by LASODA in collaboration with  Festus Fajemilo Foundation and Down Syndrome Foundation.

She lauded LAMATA for the facilities already in place on its buses and trains.

The LASODA boss urged the agency to establish dedicated disability support offices within major transport hubs to further assist PWDs navigating the system.

According to her, such offices will serve as designated points where PWDs can lodge complaints, seek directions and receive immediate assistance when required.

“Disability support offices within the transportation system will create structured channels for persons with disabilities to report challenges and receive prompt assistance. Accessibility standards must continue to evolve to ensure safety and convenience for people with different forms of disabilities,” she said.

She also offered LASODA’s support in translating information displayed on LAMATA’s buses and trains into sign language to ensure inclusive communication, adding that the agency was ready to engage drivers and operators during LAMATA’s quarterly village meetings to sensitise them on prioritising the needs of PWDs.

The Managing Director of LAMATA, Abimbola Akinajo, assured the delegation of the authority’s commitment to providing quality customer service for all commuters, irrespective of disability.

“At LAMATA, quality customer service is for everyone. We are open to learning and improving, and we take our responsibility to commuters seriously,” she said.
