LASERC gives IE up till April 3 to resolve meter row
Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) has given Ikeja Electric (IE) up till April 3 to resolve the dispute over a new meter installed in a customer’s home 51 days

Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) has given Ikeja Electric (IE) up till April 3 to resolve the dispute over a new meter installed in a customer’s home 51 days ago.
In an email to IE’s head of consumer affairs, copied the customer, LASERC directed the power distribution firm to “provide the commission with the resolution status by or before Friday, April 3, 2026”. The email was sent on March 17, with IE acknowledging receipt the same day.
LASERC said: “Should there be any anticipated delay, IE should formally communicate this to the commission in advance, outlining the specific challenges or bottlenecks impeding resolution.”

The commission’s action followed the complaint of the consumer, Lawal Ogienagbon. A new meter was installed in his house in Journalists’ Estate, Phase 1, Arepo, Ogun State, on February 3. He later learnt from IE’s Shangisha office near Magodo, Lagos that the meter, which came energised must be “commissioned” before he can start buying fresh energy units for it.
The customer made several efforts through phone calls and emails to get IE to “commission” the meter, all to no avail. In one of his emails, he wrote that he risked being thrown into darkness once the energy units that came with the meter finished since there would be no way to re-energise it.
According to the customer, nothing came out of the emails he exchanged with IE between February 24 and March 15. The one of March 5 where he said the energy units had finished and his house was now in darkness was ignored. IE responded four days later after the consumer sent another email, complaining about their handling of the issue.
Their response was the same old line that the matter was being looked into. Part of their last email dated March 15 reads: “…Please be assured that your complaint is receiving priority attention… A follow-up has been initiated once again to expedite the process…”
