The Lagos State Government has presented insurance benefit cheques to 232 beneficiaries of deceased public servants, reaffirming its commitment to workers’ welfare and family support.

The presentation, held at the State Treasury Office (STO) Resource Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, brought together government officials and families of the late staff in a solemn but reassuring ceremony.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Finance, Abayomi Oluyomi, described the occasion as both “painful and important,” noting that while it marked the remembrance of departed colleagues, it also fulfilled a promise made to them and their families.

He commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for prioritising staff welfare through people-centred policies.

“The cheques you will receive today are not just figures on paper; they represent recognition of the years of loyal service your loved ones gave to this State. They are a clear message that the Lagos State Government stands with you, even in this difficult season,” he said.

Oluyomi added that the state’s insurance scheme was designed to ensure that families are not left stranded in the event of the death of a breadwinner, expressing hope that the funds would help beneficiaries meet immediate needs and sustain family aspirations.

Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mahmud Alao, said the initiative underscored government’s moral and statutory obligation to its workforce.

“This cheque presentation ceremony underscores the unwavering commitment of the Lagos State Government to the welfare of its workforce. It reflects the value we place on service, dedication and sacrifice,” he said.

Alao assured serving public servants that the present administration remains committed to strengthening welfare policies, ensuring prompt processing and transparency in the payment of entitlements.

He noted that while no amount of compensation could replace the lives lost, the gesture was intended to provide relief and stability for the affected families.

Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the state government, noting that the support would help ease their burdens.

One of the beneficiaries, a husband of the deceased, Adefuye Adewale, said the gesture brought relief at a difficult time.

“This support means a lot to my family. It will go a long way in helping us take care of the children and continue the plans my wife had for the family ,” he said.

Another beneficiary, an orphan, Ayobami Adedeji, described the initiative as timely, noting that it demonstrated government’s compassion.

“We are grateful to the Lagos State Government for remembering us. This will help me stabilise and further my education, moving forward despite the loss,” she said.
