The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says the integration of advanced digital technologies into its operations has significantly improved emergency response and enhanced the protection of lives on roads across Lagos.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this during a comprehensive operational review, noting that the adoption of modern traffic monitoring and communication systems has transformed the agency’s capacity to detect incidents quickly and respond more efficiently.

Bakare-Oki explained that the deployment of surveillance drones, Traffic Management System (TMS) cameras, GPS-enabled patrol vehicles, body cameras, and intelligent communication systems has strengthened coordination among field officers and the agency’s central command centre.

According to him, the technologies enable the rapid detection, verification, and communication of road incidents, ensuring faster intervention by rescue and patrol teams.

He said the integration of these tools has eliminated many of the operational challenges that previously slowed emergency response, including delayed incident reporting and logistical constraints.

He said, “Our commitment to technological modernization is anchored on the imperative to safeguard human life.

“Every minute saved in emergency response is invaluable. The deployment of intelligent systems has empowered our operatives to respond with unprecedented speed, precision, and professionalism.”

The LASTMA boss noted that the agency’s Rescue Team, Monitoring and Surveillance Unit, as well as zonal commanders and comptrollers, now operate with mobile data terminals and integrated communication devices that maintain constant interaction with the central command centre.

This, he said, enables faster traffic rerouting, improved coordination with medical and security agencies, and the swift removal of accident debris from roadways to prevent secondary crashes and prolonged traffic congestion.

Bakare-Oki also revealed that predictive data analytics now plays a major role in the agency’s traffic management strategy. By analysing congestion patterns and accident-prone corridors, LASTMA can deploy personnel to critical locations ahead of peak traffic periods, helping to prevent incidents before they escalate.

He described the technological transformation as part of the state government’s broader vision to develop a smart and resilient megacity, adding that investment in digital infrastructure is strengthening institutions and improving public safety.

Beyond emergency response, the digital systems have also improved documentation, transparency in enforcement, and data-driven policy planning within the agency, he said.

Bakare-Oki reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to ensuring safer roads and maintaining efficient traffic flow across Lagos, while urging motorists and residents to cooperate with traffic officials and obey traffic regulations.

The agency, he added, will continue to invest in technological innovation, personnel development, and collaboration with other emergency and security agencies to sustain improvements in road safety and urban mobility in the state.
