LASU pro-chancellor tasks staff on research to drive varsity rating

‎He disclosed that the governing council has developed a strategic plan aimed at elevating the University through strengthened research output, strategic partnerships, and improved access to grants.

‎“Part of our resolve is to attract grants and collaborations. You can support this direction by developing robust proposals built on your areas of strength. Bring forward research ideas and innovations that the state will be proud of,” he added.

He assured staff of the council’s full support for initiatives that attract external funding and enhance the university’s visibility.

‎In her remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof.  Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, urged staff to demonstrate total commitment to resource assessment and accreditation processes.

‎“I implore all staff to be fully committed to resource assessment and accreditation. Without them, we do not have a job here,” she stated.

She emphasised that the credibility and sustainability of the college depend on successful accreditation outcomes.

‎Earlier, the Provost of LASUCOM, Prof.  Olufemi Idowu, informed the council that the college comprises 32 departments, six faculties, and seven professional programmes. He noted that LASUCOM plays a critical role in training the next generation of doctors, pharmacists and medical laboratory scientists.

‎He further explained that the college is currently preparing for resource assessment and accreditation across all seven professional programmes, describing the Council’s visit as timely and encouraging.

‎Idowu also highlighted the ongoing phased expansion of facilities at the Yaba and Gbagada annexes. While acknowledging that growth brings challenges, he assured the council that the college is strengthening its internal controls and administrative systems to ensure quality is maintained. He expressed appreciation for the council’s continued support and reaffirmed the college’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research and service.

‎Following the meeting, the delegation toured several facilities within the Medical Sciences Building, including laboratories, departmental libraries, the Information Unit, the Biomedical Communications Centre, and the Department of Physiology.

‎The team also visited the Department of Anatomy, an ongoing renovation of a 90-bed hostel, and the Faculty of Dentistry, where discussions were held on the challenges facing the Faculty and possible areas for improvement.

‎The tour concluded at the Clinical Skills Laboratories, where an exit meeting was held. The pro-chancellor thanked the LASUCOM management and staff for their warm reception and prudent management of resources. He reaffirmed the Governing Council’s commitment to ensuring that LASUCOM continues to remain the pride of LASU.

‎He assured the college that the council would carefully review the identified areas of need and work towards practical solutions. He also commended the Provost for his effective leadership and praised the management team for their dedication and commitment.
