No fewer than 137 students have emerged with First Class honours as Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) prepares to graduate 10,223 students at its 18th convocation ceremonies.

Out of the total number, 7,641 students from 11 faculties will receive bachelor’s degrees, while 2,582 fall under the postgraduate category.

The Vice-Chancellor, Razaq Kalilu, disclosed this on Thursday during a press conference held as part of activities for the convocation.

The week-long ceremony, which began on April 16, will culminate on April 23, 2026, with the award of postgraduate degrees and other honours.

A breakdown of the graduating students shows that, aside from the 137 first class graduates, 1,889 earned Second Class (Upper Division), 3,549 obtained Second Class (Lower Division), 1,008 graduated with Third Class, while 37 are in the pass category.

Kalilu identified Oladepo Caleb Olugbenga of the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering as the overall best graduating student, with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.89.

Providing further details on the postgraduate category, the Vice-Chancellor said 596 graduands will be awarded academic and professional postgraduate diplomas. He added that 1,850 candidates will receive academic and professional master’s degrees, nine will be admitted to the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) programme, while 127 will be awarded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees.

Speaking on the Federal Government’s student loan scheme managed by the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, Kalilu noted a surge in student interest. According to him, about 19,000 students applied for the scheme, with approximately 15,000 applications approved, although funds are yet to be disbursed for the current academic session.

He also highlighted improving institutional stability, noting that the university is on track to complete its fourth uninterrupted academic session.

He said, "I am pleased to inform you that afterbyeats of instability and turbulence, the University now enjoys stability. We will be completing the fourth uninterrupted academic session since I came on board at the helm of affairs of the University almost three years ago.

"For the first time in about 12years, the university gave it'd students long vacation after the last session. The uninterrupted academic calendar and sustenance of peace is due to dedication and sacrifice of members of staff and the cooperation of staff unions as well as our firmness commitment to providing strategic and all-administration."

In the area of research and academic development, the Vice Chancellor disclosed that the university recently promoted 43 professors across various disciplines, while also establishing the Sunday Adewusi Institute of Security and Strategic Studies to deepen research in security, peacebuilding and conflict resolution.

He further revealed that the university is expanding its academic scope, with plans to upgrade its Department of Architecture into a full-fledged faculty and introduce new programmes, including Medical Biotechnology and Mechatronics.

On infrastructure, Kalilu said interventions from philanthropists have resulted in the construction of major facilities, including a 1,000-seat lecture theatre, a smart research hub and a bakery.

He added that the institution has secured approval-in-principle from the Central Bank of Nigeria to establish a microfinance bank, while its campus radio station is nearing completion and expected to commence operations soon.

Addressing staff welfare, the Vice Chancellor stated that over 200 staff members benefitted from local and international training opportunities in the past year, while more than N3.1 billion has been paid to settle outstanding emoluments, pensions and third-party deductions.

Beyond academics, he noted that LAUTECH students have continued to distinguish themselves in competitions.

“Our students secured second position at an AI and Digital Music Hackathon in Abuja and also won the NASA Space Apps Challenge in Benin City, demonstrating their innovative capacity,” he said.

Looking ahead, Kalilu reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to global competitiveness through academic expansion and innovation-driven programmes.
