Former Senate President, Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, has commended the Federal Government for setting a definitive completion deadline for the long-awaited Potiskum–Jakusko–Gashua Road in Yobe State, describing the move as a major boost for infrastructure development and economic revival in the North-East.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Lawan lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as a renewed commitment to delivering critical infrastructure, citing the announcement by the Federal Controller of Works in Yobe State, Engr. Nasir Dauda, that the road project is scheduled for completion by May 14, 2026.

“The recent announcement… is a most welcome development. This clear timeline speaks to a new era of accountability and result-oriented governance under President Tinubu and the proactive supervision of the Honourable Minister for Works, Senator Engr. David Nweze Umahi,” Lawan said.

He noted that the Potiskum–Gashua corridor remains the economic lifeline of Yobe State, linking communities, facilitating trade and agricultural activities, and providing access to education and healthcare. According to him, the dilapidated condition of the road has imposed years of hardship on residents and businesses in the area.

The former Senate President highlighted that the N75.47 billion project was awarded in 2024 for rigid pavement construction, with work strategically commencing from Channel 49, identified as the most critical section of the route.

He said progress of more than 1.5 kilometres has already been recorded, as confirmed by the project manager, Engr. Kabir Fatai, under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Works and the contractor, Messrs JRB Construction Limited.

Describing the road as a strategic artery for regional integration, Lawan said its completion would “revolutionize transportation, enhance security, and unlock the immense economic potential of Yobe State and the neighboring country of Niger Republic.”

He urged the contractor to intensify work and maintain high quality standards to meet or surpass the May 2026 deadline, while calling on the Ministry of Works and its controllers to sustain rigorous oversight to ensure value for money.

“I extend my sincere gratitude to the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government and personally commend the Honourable Minister for Works, Senator David Umahi, for listening to our persistent calls and for taking this decisive action,” Lawan added, describing the project as a potential legacy of the current administration and a response to the aspirations of the people of Yobe State.
