Political tension is rising in Ikorodu Federal Constituency of Lagos State as stakeholders intensify opposition to the alleged plan by lawmaker, Babajimi Benson, to seek a fourth term in the House of Representatives.

Benson, who has represented the constituency since 2015, is serving his third term. Critics, have, however argued that another term would extend his tenure to 16 consecutive years, a development they said runs contrary to democratic ideals.

A community leader in Ikorodu, who pleaded anonymity, said the agitation goes beyond politics and reflects a concern about fairness and inclusion.

“This is not about personal attacks or denying anyone their achievements. What we are saying is that democracy thrives on rotation, fresh ideas and broader participation. When one person occupies a position for too long, it begins to shut the door against others who also have the capacity to serve. Sixteen years in the House of Representatives is simply too long for one individual, no matter how well they may have performed.”

Youth groups also in the constituency have also become increasingly vocal, warning that extending Benson’s tenure could discourage young and emerging politicians.

“A lot of young people in Ikorodu are watching what is happening closely. If the same person continues to dominate the political space for close to two decades, what message are we sending to the next generation? That leadership positions are not open to competition? That is not healthy for our democracy, and it is something we must collectively resist,” a youth representative said.
