American Black Film Festival (ABFF)-selected film, 'Lights Out' has held its premiere in Douala, Cameroon, ahead of its international run.

The film, starring Wale Ojo, Elizabeth Ngongang, Shaffy Bello and Syndy Emade, was unveiled on April 18 at Majestic Bessengue in Douala, Cameroon.

Directed by Enah Johnscott and produced by Carista Asonganyi and Buh Melvin (Baba Proxy), 'Lights Out' explores dementia through themes of family, loss and institutional failure.

Speaking during a post-screening discussion, Cameroonian actress and model Syndy Emade emphasised the growing influence of female creatives in Cameroon’s cinema landscape.

"I'm using this platform to encourage greater intentionality among women in the film industry," Emade said.

On her part, actress Elizabeth Ngongang described the emotional demands of portraying a character living with dementia.

Responding to audience questions, director Enah Johnscott said the storyline reflects the reality of dementia as a progressive condition, while co-producer Buh Melvin emphasised the film’s broader aim  to raise awareness and encourage conversations around care systems, which remain limited in Cameroon.
