Ademola Lookman and Atlético Madrid will tonight resume their growing rivalry with FC Barcelona when the two clubs meet in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals at the Spotify Camp Nou.

For Lookman, the fixture adds another chapter to what has become a recurring personal duel with Barcelona since his arrival in Spain, with the Nigerian forward having faced the Catalan giants across multiple competitions in recent months.

The two clubs met just last weekend in LaLiga, where Barcelona came from behind to win 2-1 — with Atlético's Giuliano Simeone scoring the opener before Hansi Flick's men mounted a comeback. Wednesday's Champions League tie opens a decisive trilogy of encounters between the sides, with the second leg scheduled for next week at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.

This is not the first time the clubs have crossed paths in the Champions League knockout rounds. Atlético and Barcelona met at the quarter-final stage in both the 2013/14 and 2015/16 seasons — and on both occasions, Atlético advanced to the semi-finals.

A win at Camp Nou would give Diego Simeone's side a crucial away advantage heading into the second leg, and Lookman — one of the standout performers in European football this season — will be central to those ambitions.
