Experienced coach Abdu Maikaba is set to be appointed as the new head coach of the Flying Eagles, Nigeria's U20 male team, while former Super Eagles stars Samson Siasia and Daniel Amokachi are among the candidates who have applied to lead the country's U23 Olympic team.

According to SCORENigeria,  Maikaba will succeed Aliyu Zubairu, who led the Flying Eagles to the second round of the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile. The Kano-born physics graduate has previously served as an assistant coach of the Flying Eagles and has managed several NPFL clubs, including Enyimba, Kano Pillars and Enugu Rangers. He is perhaps best remembered for guiding Akwa United to an NPFL title triumph.

Maikaba most recently served as head coach of Wikki Tourists before departing the club, citing a lack of support from management. A top NFF official also told SCORENigeria that vastly experienced coach Monday Odigie — who has worked with both the Golden Eaglets and the Flying Eagles — will serve as his first assistant.

Meanwhile, Siasia and Amokachi have both thrown their names into contention to replace Salisu Yusuf as coach of the Dream Eagles, Nigeria's U23 Olympic team. Both men have previously held the role.

Siasia, who also managed the Super Eagles and the Flying Eagles during his coaching career, guided the U23s to a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and a bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Amokachi, a World Cup winner with Nigeria in 1994, is also seeking a return to the dugout at national level.

The NFF is expected to confirm appointments for both positions in due course.
