After ten talented home cooks stepped onto the world’s most prestigious culinary stage last weekend, when MasterChef Nigeria officially opened its kitchen doors, two of the cooks have ended their journey to a life-changing grand prize of N73 million.
Over the next 12 weeks, the remaining eight cooks will battle it out for the coveted title of the first-ever MasterChef Nigeria winner and grand prize of 73 million Naira.
Guiding and judging their every move are renowned culinary masters, Chef Eros and Chef Stone.
From the very first moment, the contestants were reminded that in the MasterChef kitchen, their fiercest competitor isn’t just each other but the ticking clock.
What began with excitement, nerves, and heartfelt emotion quickly took a dramatic turn. In an unexpected twist, the judges announced that the very first challenge would be a black apron challenge, meaning an immediate elimination.
As the contestants lifted their mystery boxes, they were met with a deeply personal prompt: a photograph of someone who shaped their journey. Their task is to recreate and elevate a dish inspired by that person into a MasterChef-worthy plate, in just 60 minutes.
With everything on the line, the home cooks rose to the occasion, but for some, time proved unforgiving.
30-year-old Pearl, originally from Delta State, chose to honour her Southern roots with a bold menu of pan-seared catfish, garri polenta, and palm nut velouté (banga soup), a risky dish she had never attempted before.

In the same vein, 42-year-old Margaret drew inspiration from her employers, whom she credits for supporting her and her family. She set out to prepare egusi soup with Semo, sautéed spinach, fried plantain, and okra, but soon found herself racing against the clock.
In a devastating turn of events, Pearl faced the ultimate MasterChef setback; her dish never made it onto the plate. With nothing to present, she became the first contestant to leave the competition. Margaret’s dish, though ambitious, ultimately worked against her. In trying to impress, her flavours lacked cohesion, with Chef Stone advising, “Try to simplify your dish. I know you are trying to impress, but you also have to think about what works together.” Margaret became the second contestant to exit the MasterChef kitchen.
With two contestants already out of the competition, the pressure is officially on.
In the next episode, the spotlight turns to the judges, as contestants draw inspiration from the dishes that shaped Chef Eros and Chef Stone’s culinary journeys.
