President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), subject to Senate confirmation.
The nomination followed the removal of the former Authority Chief Executive, Mr Saidu Mohammed, a decision the presidency said was taken in the public interest.
Umar’s appointment, according to a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, is in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 and aims to strengthen regulatory efficiency in Nigeria’s midstream and downstream petroleum sector.
Who is Rabiu Abdullahi Umar?
Rabiu Abdullahi Umar is a seasoned executive with over 25 years of experience spanning the energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure sectors.
He is widely regarded for his expertise in strategic leadership, operational transformation, and the delivery of large-scale projects.
He holds a degree in Accounting from Bayero University, Kano.
He is also an alumnus of Harvard Business School, one of the world’s leading institutions for executive education.
Transition at NMDPRA
Pending Senate confirmation of his nomination, the most senior official within the NMDPRA will oversee the agency’s operations in an acting capacity.
President Tinubu expressed appreciation to the outgoing chief executive for his service and wished him success in his future endeavours.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to appointing capable leaders across key regulatory institutions to drive energy security, sector reforms, and sustainable economic growth under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
