Former Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has formally resigned from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending long-running speculation over his political affiliation.

Mimiko, who governed the sate for two terms, confirmed his exit in a letter dated April 10, 2026, addressed to the Chairman of Ward 7, Ondo West Local Government Area of the state.

In the letter, he stated: "I am tendering my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effective from April 10, 2026."

He explained that increasing public inquiries about his political status made it necessary to formally clarify that he was no longer a member of the opposition party.

"As I have been somewhat distanced from party activities, I wish to put it on record that I am no longer a member of the PDP," he added, noting that his decision was taken without animosity.

A former Chief Press Secretary to the ex-governor, Mr. Eni Akinsola, confirmed the development when contacted, saying Mimiko had indeed submitted his resignation letter, though he declined to disclose further details about his next political move.

"It is true that the former governor has formally turned in his resignation letter from the PDP," Akinsola said.

Mimiko’s exit comes amid lingering internal crises within the opposition party, though political observers note that his disengagement from active partisan politics in recent years had already fueled speculation about his next move.

Some of his loyalists had earlier left the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC), where they supported the re-election of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in the November 16, 2024 governorship election.

Prominent among them are Hon. Iranola Joseph Akinlaja, Hon. Alaba Lad Ojomo, Engr. Gboye Adegbenro, Rt. Hon. Jumoke Akindele, and Jide Adejuyigbe, among others.

Sources familiar with developments also hinted that the former governor may be preparing to formally join the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to one source, Mimiko has held consultations with key APC figures in Ondo State and Abuja, with indications that he may support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.

"He has pitched his tent with the APC and is back to the progressive family where he belongs," the source said.
