A Delta-based investor and entrepreneur, Alfred Mrakpor, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate diplomatic steps to address growing concerns over the safety and treatment of Nigerians living in South Africa.
In a formal letter addressed to the President, Mrakpor expressed “deep concern” about recent developments affecting Nigerians and other Black African residents in South Africa.
He noted that while sovereign nations have the right to enforce immigration laws, such actions must respect human dignity and adhere to international standards.
According to him, emerging reports point to alleged cases of harassment, intimidation, and disruption of lawful businesses owned by foreign nationals.
He also raised alarm over what he described as the inhumane treatment of vulnerable individuals, including some who reportedly possess valid documentation.
“Even more troubling are instances where individuals with proper papers are subjected to similar actions,” Mrakpor stated, emphasizing the need for urgent intervention.
He urged President Tinubu to demonstrate leadership by taking decisive steps to protect Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.
" Immediate diplomatic engagement with South African authorities to safeguard Nigerian citizens. A clear public statement reassuring Nigerians of the government’s commitment to their welfare"
" Implementation of contingency measures, including support for voluntary returnees. A review of bilateral relations to ensure mutual respect and protection of national interests."
Mrakpor stressed that proactive leadership at this time would not only protect lives but also strengthen public confidence in the government’s responsibility toward its citizens abroad.
The appeal comes amid recurring tensions and concerns over the treatment of foreign nationals in South Africa, an issue that has periodically strained relations between Nigeria and South Africa.
