The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has commended the Federal Government for suspending petrol imports into Nigeria, citing the growing capacity of local refineries.
The group praised the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu for halting petrol importation following a noticeable increase in domestic production.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the organization's Executive Director, Ishaq Akintola, described the move as a commendable and nationalistic step that would strengthen local refining capacity.
According to him, the policy would widen the market for domestic refineries while preventing saturation caused by the excessive inflow of imported petroleum products.
He, however, urged the government to ensure an adequate supply of crude oil to local refineries to guarantee their effective operation and enhance Nigeria’s energy self-sufficiency.
Akintola noted that it would be counterproductive if refineries within the country continued to struggle with crude supply despite the longstanding challenges associated with fuel scarcity.
He expressed concern over reports that the Dangote Refinery was receiving only between 28 and 32 per cent of the crude oil required for full operations.

The MURIC director called on President Tinubu to issue an executive order mandating the supply of 100 per cent of the crude oil needed by local refineries.
He also praised the Federal Government for releasing 100,000 compressed natural gas buses aimed at easing transportation challenges faced by Nigerians.
Akintola added that ensuring full crude supply to domestic refineries, particularly at a critical time for the country’s energy sector, would help reduce operational costs and ultimately make fuel more affordable for citizens.
