The Plateau State government has spent over N300 million in buying palliatives for the support of the Muslim Ummah religious obligation at Ramadan and Eid-el-Firtir season.

The Special Adviser to the governor on Intergovernmental Affairs, Abubakar Yahaya Kanam, who doubled as the chairman Sallah Palliative Distribution Committee, stated this yesterday in Jos.

The amount was spent in buying  mostly food items like rice, millets and spaghett, which were distributed to members across the 17 local government areas of the state.

Kanam said the beneficiaries were vulnerable women, youths, and clerics.

He said 24 liaison officers appointed by Mutfwang from various constituencies of the local government were also engaged in profiling of beneficiaries to enhance transparency and accountability of the palliative distribution.

“We are here as the usual norm that every Sallah the good government of the Plateau State is to celebrate and show mercy, love and benevolence to Muslim of Plateau State by giving us the Muslim of Plateau State some palliative to share showing that we are together as one.

“This year’s distribution was quite significant and different, that every Christmas we realised that the Muslims Ummah also benefited from the Christmas palliative initiative. Christians will benefit from it too,” Kanam stated.

According to him, “we are not God, so we cannot capture everybody. But, what we can do as a government. We should try as much as possible to do it honestly and diligently.

“As you can see, these grains are not just the only grains here. We are going stage by stage so that we should make sure we capture almost virtually everybody.”

He appealed to the Muslim Ummah to be united and accord loyalty and support for the administration in the state, noting that the palliative came from the taxpayers’ money.
