Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base, Ikeja has rolled out week-long activities to mark the 25th remembrance anniversary of Group Captain Sam Ethnan, who died in April 2001 while performing official duties.

Commander of the Base Service Group (BSG), Air Commodore Mohammed Imam, said the late Ethnan was one of the pioneer commanders of the NAF Base, who distinguished himself with the introduction of visible, meaningful and sustainable development that brought the base to the limelight.

‘’He was a professional soldier of repute and a base commander, who instilled discipline, accountability and sense of belonging in other officers, airmen and civilian workers,’’ Imam said.

He said under his watch, the base underwent a rapid and remarkable transformation.

Imam said the late Ethnan was an exceptional leader during his life, as he introduced environment cleanliness, layout, aesthetic landscaping barracks, offices and spaces among others.

‘’He set a benchmark other Nigerian Air Force bases seek to emulate. His sagacity and counselling earned him respect among his peers.’’

Commodore Imam said the late Group Captain Ethnan was respected for his selflessness, with a deep concern over the welfare of his men and their families.

‘’He was therefore described as a mentor and a father to many young officers and airmen who benefited from his guidance and knowledge.

‘’Because of these achievements, the base was renamed after him.’’

Other top officers who paid glowing tributes and eulogised the late Ethnan are Air Commodore Akintunde, Air Commodore Agbebi and others.
