The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has marked World Optometry Day with a sensitisation lecture and eye screening programme for personnel and their families in Lagos.

This, the service said, was part of efforts to strengthen operational readiness and welfare.

According to details obtained from its official Facebook page, the event, organised by the Logistics Command at the NAF Officers’ Mess Gym, Ikeja, aligned with the global theme “A Shared Vision".

It said the screening promoted improved access to quality eye care and professional collaboration, in line with priorities outlined by the World Council of Optometry.

Speaking at the programme, the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Logistics Command, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Abubakar Abdul Suleh, said the initiative underscored the service’s commitment to accessible eye care, particularly glaucoma awareness and screening for personnel aged 40 and above.

He noted that good visual health enhances alertness, aviation safety, engineering precision and mission effectiveness across operations.

Also speaking, the Commander, 661 NAF Hospital, Adedoyin Simon Oyenusi, described sound eyesight as essential to safety, efficiency and peak performance in military service.

A lecture delivered by A. A. Bashir highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and prompt treatment of glaucoma, one of the leading causes of vision loss.

The initiative, the NAF said, aligned with the command philosophy of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, which prioritises innovation, human capacity development and smarter airpower delivery to sustain operational excellence and national security.
