The Nigerian Navy has intercepted about 44,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and arrested eight suspected oil thieves in Degema, Ogbogoro, and Ogbologo areas of Rivers State.
The operation, conducted under Operation Delta Sentinel by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder, followed credible intelligence about ongoing illicit refining activities in the area.
A statement on Sunday by the Director of Naval Information (DINFO), Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, said operatives deployed on anti-crude oil theft patrol intercepted two wooden boats conveying the products. He added that other armed suspects fled on sighting the naval team.
“The arrested suspects and recovered products are currently in custody and will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution,” the statement said.
The Navy said the operation aligned with the directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, to intensify the crackdown on crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, and other maritime crimes.
It reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining intelligence-driven operations, enhanced patrols, and inter-agency collaboration to protect Nigeria’s maritime assets and economic interests.
