NEMA warns against fire disasters, health risks as temperature rises
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a warning on the increased risk of fire incidents and related health hazards, following the recent rise in daily temperatures and heatwave
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a warning on the increased risk of fire incidents and related health hazards, following the recent rise in daily temperatures and heatwave conditions across several parts of the country.
According to the agency, elevated temperatures have been confirmed in recent forecasts by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which indicate a likelihood of persistent extreme heat in the coming days.
The Director-General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, advised Nigerians to exercise caution when handling materials and appliances that could easily trigger fire outbreaks, particularly during periods of intense heat.
In a statement released by the Head of Press Unit, Manzo Ezekiel, the DG specifically urged households, business operators, and public institutions to ensure the safe use of electrical devices, gas cylinders, and other combustible materials. She noted that excessive heat increases the vulnerability of such items to accidental ignition, heightening the risk of fires.
NEMA further emphasised the need for vigilance in both domestic and commercial settings, reminding the public that preventive measures, such as proper maintenance of electrical wiring and safe storage of flammable substances, are critical in reducing fire hazards during the heatwave.
The agency also encouraged communities to remain alert and report any fire incidents promptly to local emergency services to prevent escalation.

Mrs. Umar highlighted that beyond the immediate risk of fires, extreme heat can contribute to health challenges, including dehydration and heat-related illnesses, urging Nigerians to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families.
The warning comes as several regions of the country experience sustained high temperatures, raising concerns about safety and public health amid ongoing heatwave conditions.
She also emphasised the need for proper storage of flammable substances, avoidance of bush burning, and ensuring that electrical connections are properly maintained to reduce the risk of fire incidents.
The DG NEMA further advised citizens to take preventive measures against heat-related health challenges by staying well hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and paying special attention to vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and persons with underlying health conditions.
Umar, while urging communities to report any fire outbreak or emergency to appropriate response agencies, also called on residents to remain attentive to weather forecasts and safety advisories issued by relevant authorities, particularly NiMet and emergency management agencies,
She reaffirmed NEMA’s commitment to continuous public awareness and proactive disaster risk reduction in line with the Federal Government’s efforts to safeguard lives, property, and the environment.
