…Lagos police up surveillance of worship places

...Rejigged strategy, community partnerships behind crime reduction

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police (CP), Olohundare Jimoh, has said that a new anti-crime and community partnership squad has been created to further improve the security of lives and properties in Lekki, Ajah, and environs.

He said the squad would complement the efforts of the existing policing structure, adding that personnel deployed there were those withdrawn from VIP protection following a presidential directive.

The Police boss disclosed this at a press briefing at the command headquarters, where he highlighted the achievements of the command since February 2025.

According to him, the new squad was domiciled in Lekki because the Eko Strike Force has its base at Somolu and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) at Alausa, thus making intervention or response to distress calls swift.

Noting that the crime rate in the state has further reduced with visibility and intelligence-led policing sustained since he assumed office, CP Jimoh thanked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for providing the necessary resources and enabling environment for the command to function.

He noted that the crime prevention and control put in place when he assumed office were also responsible for blocking all access, flash points, and loose ends usually explored by criminals.

He also praised Lagos residents for partnering with the police and owning the process, noting that intelligence-led policing, community partnerships, and strengthened operational strategies were all responsible for the achievement.

On security arrangements for the Ramadan and Lenten season, CP Jimoh said operational order had already been prepared, assuring that there would be more surveillance of worship centres.

Continuing, the police boss maintained that Lagos was stable and there were no serious breaches of public peace, adding that civil protests were professionally managed without escalation.

He said the command recovered over 150 assorted vehicles within this period, adding that several wanted suspects were arrested and charged in court.

The commissioner reported a major reduction in cultism and cult-related violence, with notorious flashpoints in areas like Oshodi, Ketu, Mushin, and Lagos Island now under control.

“Several suspects linked to violent crimes were arrested, including a long-time gang leader, who had been on the police watchlist for nearly two decades,” he said.

The police boss said that Tactical squads were expanded from 23 to 35 units, covering all local government areas, while intelligence and surveillance operations helped prevent opportunistic crimes.
