Abia State has taken a major step toward inclusive sports development with the inauguration of the Abia State Para Athletics Association Board, an initiative already yielding tangible results following impressive performances by state athletes on the national stage.
The newly constituted board has quickly made its mark, with Abia para-athletes securing one silver and three bronze medals at the National Para Athletics Championship held in Abuja on March 26, 2026. The outcome was credited to deliberate planning and early intervention.
In preparation for the championship, the board organized a training camp for 20 athletes in Umuahia, providing structured coaching, proper nutrition, and essential equipment, including running spikes. This level of support ensured that the athletes were competition-ready and able to perform effectively.
The board was officially inaugurated on April 29, 2026, at the Indoor Hall of the Umuahia Township Stadium by the Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, on behalf of Governor Dr. Alex Chioma Otti. He tasked members with delivering strong leadership, promoting athlete welfare, and expanding opportunities for participation at both national and international levels.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Nwadimma Ananaba, urged the board to align with the state’s vision of building a leading sports hub, stressing the need for transparency, dedication, and teamwork.
