The Nigeria Football Referees’ Association (NFRA) has unveiled a new annual awards initiative to recognise top referees and honour its late former presidents.

The programme, led by Acting President Kelechi Mejuobi, will debut at the end of the 2025/2026 season and will cover multiple categories across Nigerian leagues.

The initiative also fulfils Mejuobi’s promise to immortalise past leaders.

An ad-hoc committee led by Prof Dele Ladipo has been set up to ensure transparency in the selection process, working alongside the NFF Referees Committee and league bodies.

The NFRA said the awards will promote professionalism and reinforce its “fair and firm” officiating philosophy.

The association also plans a separate programme to honour living legends.

The award categories include:Otunba Tade Azeez Best Referee (NPFL);Col JD Yabilsu Best Assistant Referee;Prof Babatunde Esan Best Female Referee;Chief Reuben Mannock Best Referee (NNL North) and Chief Festus Okubule Best Referee (NNL South).
