Nigeria is in capable hands under the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara said yesterday.

He called for the President’s re-election to enable him put Nigeria firmly on the party of progress.

Fubara said within three years, President Tinubu has transformed the country, revived the economy and initiated infrastructural revolution, including the coastal road in South and other parts of Nigeria.

He said the President’s reelection would enable him consolidate on the ongoing reforms and developmental efforts.

Fubara spoke during the meeting of the Southern Traditional Rulers Council  in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The Ooni of Ife and Chairman, Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, led traditional rulers from the 17 Southern states to the meeting where they renewed their calls for peace, unity and national cohesion as well as support for Tinubu’s government.

The meeting was attended by notable traditional rulers, including the co-Chairman of the council, the Obi of Obinugwu, Eze Cletus Illomuanya, and the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja.

Fubara said: “Let us take pride that our country is in capable hands under our dedicated and highly patriotic President, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“We are all witnesses to the transformation of our battered economy and the ongoing infrastructural revolution, including the remarkable coastal road project, in the Southern and other parts of the country within just three years.

“Although challenges remain in certain regions, we all trust in Mr President’s renewed Hope Agenda and dedication to safeguarding our nation, transforming the economy, and delivering equitable development to all regions.”

He added: “In football, the saying goes that no coach changes a winning team. Therefore, Nigerians have no choice but to support President Tinubu at this crucial time and work together to re-elect him in 2027 to continue implementing his bold, daring, and ambitious vision and agenda for the inclusive and sustainable development of our nation.”

The governor said the meeting of the monarchs confirmed that Rivers is peaceful and always ready to host high-profile visits, meetings, and events aimed at promoting national peace and unity.

He said the meeting confirmed and upheld the unity of the Southern region as one people with a shared destiny, adding that though ethnic, cultural and linguistic differences exit, stakeholders are committed to one indivisible country.

Fubara said the region must build its future together and promote the collective interests of its people for a better life through collaboration with the Federal Government.

The governor said southern cooperation and solidarity would offer a clearer and more practical pathway for sharing knowledge and ideas, working together to realise the common goals and aspirations of the people for sustainable peace, security, and development.

Fubara stressed: “I believe this is a key reason for establishing the Southern Traditional Rulers Council. And for this aim, you have dedicated significant time, resources, and effort since its inception.

“Suffice it to say that you have proven to be a formidable voice for advancing the collective identity, political, and socio-economic interests of Southern Nigeria within the short period of your existence”.

Fubara commended the traditional rulers for choosing to discuss the roles of traditional institutions in promoting unity, peace, cohesion, and development across Southern Nigeria.

He highlighted the constitutional roles of traditional rulers, saying that they are custodians of customs and traditions, and partners with the government in peace-building and promoting national unity and cohesion.

Fubara added: “Most importantly, by being closest to the grassroots, you serve as a link between the people and the government, wielding capacities and influence that extend beyond your ceremonial roles.

“Therefore, as we commend you for your efforts and commitment to a peaceful and progressive Southern Nigeria, I urge you to stay vigilant and stay focused on pursuing your cultural, economic, and political goals for the region and its people”, he said.

The governor said he had benefited from the insights, contributions, and wisdom of traditional rulers in shaping government policies and promoting peace and progress in communities.

He added: “Our government has also been strengthened by your consistent support, solidarity, and prayers as we continue to navigate the terrible political waters to protect and deliver good governance to the good people of Rivers State.”

Oba Ogunwusi said the forum was aimed at strengthening collaboration among monarchs and promoting progress in the country.

He thanked the governor for honouring the gathering, noting that his presence demonstrated commitment to traditional institutions and national unity.

He said the council reflected Nigeria’s diversity, with over 400 ethnic dialects, describing it as the country’s greatest strength.

Oba Ogunwusi stressed: “Our diversity is our strength. This Council represents Nigeria in its truest form.”

The Ooni noted that the meeting, which began in Imo State and later held in Ogun and Lagos states, shifted to Rivers as part of efforts to deepen unity across the South.

He said the monarchs would deliberate on issues of peace, security, development and cooperation, stressing that Nigeria’s cultural heritage remains the foundation of national identity.

He highlighted the unique composition of the council, which includes religious leaders, judges, retired generals, lawmakers and other professionals, saying the body is well positioned to contribute to national development.

Oba Ogunwusi reaffirmed the Council’s support for the Federal Government, noting that the President, being from Southern Nigeria, represents the collective interest of the region.

He said the monarchs would continue to offer advice and support, particularly in areas of security and national integration.

Oba Ogunwusi said traditional rulers would not remain passive in the face of challenges confronting the country, but would actively engage in promoting peace and stability.

He said: “The essence of our gathering is to focus on what binds us together as one nation. The work we are doing here is serious and deeply significant because Nigeria is greater than any individual among us. Our culture, traditions, and heritage form the bedrock of our identity and the foundation of our nation.

“Within this council, we are blessed with a unique blend of leadership and expertise. Among us are religious leaders—both Christian and Muslim—who also serve as traditional rulers. We have members of the judiciary, retired generals, senators, members of the House of Representatives, governors, and accomplished professionals.”

Oba Ogunwusi added: “This diversity of experience positions us as a formidable force for national development. We are gathered here to deliberate on critical issues—peace, unity, cohesion, development, and cooperation across Southern Nigeria.

“We also reaffirm our commitment to working closely with the Federal Government. We are fortunate that the current President is a product of Southern Nigeria, representing all of us as the father of the nation.

“It is our responsibility to support the government, while also offering constructive guidance in areas such as security, unity, and national integration”.
