Nigeria has reaffirmed its resolve to champion multilateral cooperation in confronting hunger and poverty, declaring that the nation remains a responsible and forward-looking voice on the global stage.

This was made known at the 49th Session of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Governing Council, which concluded in Rome, with Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, leading the charge for strategic investment in youth and women in agriculture.

The biennial meeting, themed “From Farm to Market: Investing in Young Entrepreneurs,” underscored the critical role of young people in driving job creation, innovation, and inclusive growth across rural economies.

Kyari, who was recently elected as the Chairperson of IFAD’s Governing Council, having previously served as Vice Chair,

emphasised that prioritising youth and women in agriculture aims to unlock economic opportunities, drive innovation, and foster inclusive growth.

In a statement by the Head, Department of Information at the Ministry, Ezeaja Ikemefuna, Kyari lauded President Bola  Tinubu for his clear mandate placing food security at the centre of Nigeria’s national priorities.

He noted that Nigeria’s stewardship at IFAD aligns with the President’s charge to strengthen agricultural productivity, expand opportunities for youth and women, and build resilient systems capable of withstanding climate and market disruptions.

The Minister also commended the strong performance of the IFAD Nigeria Country Office, led by Country Director Ms. Dede Ekoue, for translating global commitments into measurable impacts for rural communities, particularly in strengthening value chains, empowering youth and women, and building resilience among smallholder farmers.

Expressing appreciation to Member States for the trust reposed in him, Kyari reaffirmed his commitment to serve with humility and diligence.

“I remain committed to serving with humility, diligence, and an unwavering focus on rural women and men worldwide.

“The emphasis on youth and women in agriculture aims to unlock economic opportunities, drive innovation, and foster inclusive growth, ultimately strengthening food systems and reducing hunger and poverty across the globe,” he said.

Key highlights of the 49th Session included a Centre Stage event featuring IFAD President Álvaro Lario and leading African entrepreneur Tony Elumelu, who spotlighted the catalytic role of young innovators in transforming rural economies.
