From Frank Ikpefan, Abuja

The National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education (NMEC) has launched a staff-driven community literacy programme aimed at reaching many Nigerians.

Speaking at the launch on Tuesday in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of NMEC, Prof Musa Maitafsir, described the initiative as a decisive step toward bridging the nation’s literacy gap and empowering citizens for national development.

He explained that the programme would begin as a pilot scheme in the Federal Capital Territory, focusing on community engagement through traditional and religious leaders, as well as women and youth groups.

The executive secretary, who was represented by the Director of Literacy and Development, Dr. John Onimisi, revealed that the commission was targeting no fewer than 300,000 youths and adults in the FCT with functional literacy skills in the first phase.

Prof Maitafsir noted that illiteracy remains a major obstacle to economic inclusion and social equity in Nigeria.

According to him, the newly launched NMEC Staff-Led Literacy Facilitation Initiative (NSLFI) will see staff of the commission deployed directly into communities across the country to establish and manage literacy centres, particularly in underserved areas.

He said, “This initiative is not merely a programme; it is a call to action rooted in the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President and the National Education Roadmap.

“We declare today that NMEC staff across the headquarters, zones, and the 36 states of the federation, including the FCT, will lead by example through direct participation.”

He outlined the strategy for implementation, which includes the provision of teaching and learning materials, training of staff in adult education methodologies, and the integration of digital literacy into learning programmes.

“Key features of the initiative include staff volunteers serving as facilitators in community learning centres, markets, workplaces, and religious gatherings, as well as the integration of literacy with practical skills such as financial literacy, health education, and vocational training,” he added.

The NMEC boss called on staff members to take ownership of the initiative, especially those residing in underserved communities.

He also reassured communities that the programme is designed as a partnership rather than an imposition.

The executive secretary said: “I urge every one of you to embrace this as your personal contribution. Your involvement will inspire learners and demonstrate that literacy is a shared national responsibility.

“We come not to impose, but to partner, to teach, and to learn from you. Together, we will build a literate, skilled, and empowered Nigeria.”

The Executive Secretary emphasised that the initiative aligned with global education goals, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 4, which promotes inclusive and equitable quality education.

He stressed the urgency of the mission, saying, “Eradicating illiteracy is not optional; it is essential for our nation’s survival and prosperity.”

The executive secretary expressed confidence that the programme would yield measurable progress in the coming months.
