The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), under the leadership of Dr. Agbo Major, has distanced itself from the resolutions reached at the opposition political parties’ summit held on Saturday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Addressing reporters yesterday in Abuja, Major said the party was neither represented nor officially involved in the coalition gathering.

The NNPP stalwart stressed that the presence of some expelled members of the party at the meeting should not be misconstrued as participation by the NNPP.

“The NNPP, as a registered political party, wishes to categorically distance itself from the just-concluded opposition parties’ summit held in Ibadan.

“None of the recognised leaders of our great party attended that gathering, nor was the party represented in any official capacity,” he said.

Major cautioned the coalition’s leadership against allowing individuals he called impostors to use the party’s name for relevance or political advantage.

Also, the Accord (party) has denied involvement in the plan by opposition political parties to field a single presidential candidate in next year’s general election.

The African Action Congress and its founder, Omoyele Sowore, had distanced themselves from the plot to present a single presidential candidate to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

At a summit in Ibadan at the weekend attended by officials of the David Mark-led faction of the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), opposition leaders said they had resolved to present a single candidate for the Presidential seat in 2027.

But Accord’s National Publicity Secretary, Joseph Omorogbe, decried the participation of Accord in the meeting where the coalition resolved to field a single presidential candidate in the 2027 general election.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja, Omorogbe said: “Accord is not aware of the coalition meeting and did not send any member to represent the party, let alone endorse the resolutions reached, including fielding a joint candidate in the 2027 presidential election.

“It is imprudent and unjust to include a political party in a coalition it was not a part of.

“The party strongly condemns the organisers for adding its name in the list of political parties that participated in the meeting, conscious of the fact that the national leadership of Accord was not involved in anyway.

“Accordingly, the Maxwell Mgbuden’s leadership of Accord dissociates itself from the Ibadan political summit and warns politicians to desist from any action that will heat up the polity ahead of the 2027 polls.

“Political parties are free to form a coalition that will produce a joint presidential candidate, which should be restricted to the parties involved. Accord is embarrassed by the reckless action of the organisers and demands that its name be expunged immediately.

“The party is focused on winning the Ekiti and Osun governorship polls, preparing for the 2027 general election, and will not be distracted by the intrigues of anti-democratic forces.

“The party urges citizens to be in one accord. Together, we will build a stronger, better and greater democratic society that future generations will be proud of.”
