The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, on Tuesday dismissed insinuations of a rift between him and Governor Seyi Makinde, as well as the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, describing his relationship with both leaders as cordial.

Speaking with journalists in Oyo town, the monarch said there was no misunderstanding between him and the governor, stressing that any issues, if they arise, would be resolved privately.

“I have nothing against the government. The governor has been very nice. If there is anything, I will meet him one-on-one and we will talk about it,” he said.

Addressing concerns over his recent absence at some state functions, the Alaafin attributed it to health challenges, noting that he had been indisposed for some time.

“There is no form of misunderstanding. I have a good relationship with my governor. I have been indisposed for some time, which is why I have been absent at state functions recently. But if there is a function, I will attend,” he added.

The monarch also dismissed reports of strained relations with the Olubadan, insisting that both traditional rulers maintain mutual respect and understanding.

He blamed the rumours on activities of social media bloggers, alleging that some individuals were using them to attack his person, position and the stool.

“My relationship with the Olubadan is cordial. Some people use the online bloggers to join the popular bandwagon. There is no misunderstanding. The create discord where non exist between just anyone and I. They attach meanings and issues to almost anything and everything", he said.

Recounting a recent incident that sparked speculation, the Alaafin explained that he had extended a handshake which the Olubadan did not initially acknowledge, but later clarified that it was unintentional.

“I extended my hand to him, but he later explained that he did not see it. I don’t see it as an offence. After that incident, he called me, and we later met again at Aso Rock during an iftar. There is no misunderstanding between us.

"People have had to ask him too and he told them there was no issue between us. In fact, he picked his phone to call me and we spoke. There's no issue whatsoever between us. We have mutual respect for each other", he said.

The Alaafin further blamed the spread of false narratives on bloggers and individuals seeking attention, noting that such developments are part of the realities of occupying a revered traditional stool.

“People peddling rumours about me; it is because of the throne. Bloggers create problems where there are none. It is part of the job,” he said.

He, however, emphasised that he harbours no grievances against any individual or institution, saying, “I have nothing against anybody."

The monarch also expressed appreciation to members of the media for their consistent support of the palace, describing journalists as partners in progress.

He disclosed that preparations were underway for his upcoming birthday on July 18, during which some deserving individuals would be conferred with chieftaincy titles.

Recounting his experience on the throne in the last one year, the monarch highlighted ongoing developmental efforts, noting that a land committee had been established to address land disputes, while plans were in motion to construct a civic centre.

He added that renovation works were also ongoing at the palace as part of efforts to preserve its heritage and improve its infrastructure.

He said "The journey so far has been mixed but we thank God that he has been faithful and supportive. In my one year in office, there are aomethings I am doing.

"So far, we have had over 200 cases of land dispute and to sort it, I have set up land dispute committee including some Chiefs and dignitaries to address the issue.

"Oyo need tangible developments and we have commenced a community health centre under construction which will be Commission in July. The facility is valued at about N800 million. We are also working towards a civic centre aside the ongoing renovation of the palace."

Speaking on the challenges, he said, "Sittinh on this throne, ypunwoukd expect a lot of things to happen.  People peddle a lot of rumours about me, maybe the throne itself is attracting a lot of jealousy and people tried to bring out issues where there is non, especially the social media bloggers. I am coping with it and I think I am getting use to it."
