Lagos State Governor  Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed the state’s government commitment to promoting polo and sports generally in Lagos and across the country.

He lauded the foremost Lagos Polo Club for showcasing excellence in the noble game in Africa and globally.

Sanwo-Olu who was the Special Guest of Honour at the grand finale week of the biggest polo festival in the continent, pointed out that Lagos State  will continue to partner the club in its promotion of tourism as a  driver for the celebration of the highly revered Lagos heritage.

“Polo has been part of our history since 1904, and it is a point of pride to see that tradition still going strong. Lagos remains a global stage for excellence, and I thank the organizers and the teams for delivering a tournament that keeps our city firmly on the map,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Sanwo-Olu who cheered the teams in the final match of the Governor’s Cup, congratulated the winners and the Runner’s-up  for their discipline and sportsmanship throughout the match, while leading other dignitaries to hand-out the prizes at a colourful presentation ceremony.

A playing member of the prestigious Lagos Polo Club, Sanwo-Olu  commended all the participating teams and  Nigerian players and their foreign counterparts for making the 122th anniversary of the tournament such a spectacle and memorable.

The final weekend of the prestigious NPA/GTCO 2026 Lagos international tournament that galloped off January 27 and thrilled till February 15, provided another wave of triumphs, disappointments and astounding athletic achievements with Lagos based teams letting out the biggest roars, dominating on all fronts.

Hosted at the historic Lagos Polo Ground, drew elite local and international teams, dignitaries, corporate leaders, business tycoons, diplomats and thousands of spectators, cementing its reputation as Africa’s premier polo showcase.

The final of the Majekodunmi Cup, the event’s biggest title on offer, provided an epic polo battle that thrilled for six explosive chukkas as Lagos STL defeated Shoreline/A1 10–7 in a match decided by dramatic late goals.

That historic victory marked a dominant campaign for Seyi Tinubu’s STL team that also claimed the Independence Cup, Dapo Ojora Cup, Owen Cup, and the Argentine Ambassador’s Cup — a clean sweep that showcased the team’s depth, discipline, and championship pedigree.

Following on the leading triumph of STL, Lagos Art Hotel polo team provided the upset of the tournament when it came back from 2-6 trailing with two chukkas left to play, to win the event’s second most wanted prize, the Chapel Hill Denham Cup 13-12, scoring the winner in the minute of the encounter.

Shoreline/A1 team put host Lagos polo Club firmly on the driving seats clinching the traditional Oba of Lagos Cup, while top favourites MSD BabyBear once again confirmed Lagos supremacy with a sensational Low Cup victory against arch rivals Lagos Saopolo. Lagos Ibah also enjoyed podium celebration with their Heritage Cup win.

Only two major titles escaped the rampant Lagos teams as Brigadier General led YBL team from Port Harcourt outscored Kano Anadariya Stables to win the glittering Governor’s Cup, just as Kano Alchemy defeated Lagos MSR to clinch the Silver Cup and carted home the Sani Dangote Memorial Cup in an impressive campaign run for laurels.

Elated President of Lagos Polo Club, Adeyemo Alakija who thanked all visiting polo clubs for honouring the invitations to be part of the Lagos polo showpiece, hailed Lagos teams for their commanding supremacy and demonstration of sportsmanship, discipline, commitment and teamwork throughout the three weeks duration of the prestigious festival.
