...ends manual process March 1, 2026

The National Population Commission (NPC) has launched the electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (eCRVS) system in Delta state, marking the transition from manual to digital registration of births and deaths, with the manual process set to end on March 1, 2026.

Kicking off the ceremony yesterday in Asaba, the state capital, the Federal Commissioner representing Delta state in the commission, Hon. (Mrs) Blessyn Brume-Ataguba, said the initiative reflected President Bola Tinubu's commitment to strengthening civil registration through improved data capturing, collation, processing, dissemination, and access.

Brume-Ataguba explained that the exercise formed part of Nigeria’s compliance with the resolutions of the Conference of African Ministers responsible for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics and would contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 16, 9, and 2.

She said the digital system would overhaul the registration of births and deaths and lay a solid foundation for an efficient civil registration and vital statistics framework.

She added that the Commission had invested considerable time and resources over the years in planning an improved digitisation process of vital events to provide the nation with reliable electronic data for socio-economic planning.

She assured that comptrollers across the 25 local government areas of the state would be equipped with the necessary gadgets for the exercise and called for a stronger partnership with the Delta State Government.

In her remarks, the state Director of NPC, Mrs. Jane Odiwe, said the Commission was working at the grassroots to ensure registration services were active in every local government area.

She told parents that once a child’s birth is registered, the record automatically generates a National Identification Number (NIN), which is printed on the birth certificate, eliminating the need for separate registration.

Odiwe described the birth certificate as essential for access to education, healthcare, and global opportunities, urging parents to register their children to secure their identity and future.

Also speaking at the event, the state ICT lead (ECRVS), Mrs. Jeremiah Erunube, explained the digitisation process and the self-service feature on the web platform.

Also speaking, the Head of Vital Registration, Mrs. Mary Akiti, called on the media to intensify efforts in publicising the initiative.
