The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has introduced a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to regulate cleaning operations across its train coaches and railway stations nationwide.

The Corporation presented the new guidelines on Wednesday during a workshop held at its headquarters in Lagos for cleaning service providers drawn from across the country.

Managing Director of the NRC, Dr Kayode Opeifa, said cleaning in modern railway operations had moved beyond routine activity to a strategic function that directly affects passenger safety, customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.

He explained that the workshop, organised by the Business Processes, Efficiency and Due Diligence Desk, was designed to establish uniform standards and introduce quality control cleaning codes for all operators engaged by the Corporation.

“Today marks an important milestone in our collective effort to transform the Nigerian Railway into a model train service not only in transportation but also in the quality of the environment we provide for our passengers,” he said.

“The success of train service is not measured only by the number of trains that run on time, but also by the quality of sanitation at the stations and inside the coaches. It is measured by cleanliness, comfort and the confidence passengers have in our services.”

Director of Business Processes, Efficiency and Due Diligence, Mr Oyekunle Oyewole, said all 24 cleaning service providers who attended the workshop were expected to comply fully with the new standards.

Oyewole noted that future performance assessments would be based strictly on adherence to the operational procedures and codes introduced by the Corporation.
