NSCDC operatives arrest 16 suspected criminals for kidnapping, illegal mining

The operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have arrested sixteen criminal suspects for kidnapping, illegal mining, theft and illegal possession of fire arms and fake currency amounting to 600,000 dollars.
The suspects were arrested in Kano, Edo, Gombe and Yobe states during operations carried out by the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CG-SIS).
The public relations officer of the Corps in Abuja, Babawale Afolabi, said the offences of the suspects ranged from criminal conspiracy, criminal trespass, suspected kidnapping, illegal mining, unlawful possession of firearms, printing of counterfeit US dollars, to obtaining by false pretense, and other related crimes.
He qouted the Commander of the CG-SIS, Commandant Appolos Dandaura, as saying that some of the suspects were arrested in Kano while others were arrested around of BUA Cement Company, Okpella, Etsako East LGA of Edo State for illegal mining activities and other criminalities.
"One Abbas Lawan Garkuwa is involved in printing counterfeit US dollars and was arrested with fake 600,000 US dollars, an equivalent of almost one billion naira, and also for obtaining money by false pretense after issuing fake United States dollars amounting to $6,200 to a victim at an exchange rate of ₦1,452, having earlier obtained ₦9 million from the victim", Afolabi said.

He said one of the suspect upon investigation further revealed his involvement in counterfeit currency business with one Usman Muazu of Tanturus in Gombe State, who is still at large.
Afolabi said various dangerous weapons including guns, ammunition, knives, amongst others were recovered from the suspects.
He gave the suspects names as Nurudeen Lawali, Jamilu Danyaro, Yasir Sanusi, Sarfilu Haruna, Yusuf Aminu, Nasiru Ibrahim, Shafiu Jafar, Suleiman Muhammadu, Auwulu Ladan, Rabiu Nura, Nasiru Mohammed Kabir, and Shamsu Yusuf. Other are Kaumi Alhaji Kadau, Suleiman Malam Uba, and Isiyaka Suleiman.
"Their arrest followed sustained intelligence and operational onslaught in response to rising security concerns and kidnapping activities around the Okpella and Etsako axis of Edo State and its environs", Afolabi said.
He said the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Audi, commended the squad for their display of gallantry and professionalism in carrying out their duties diligently.
He said the CG expressed deep worry over the increasing involvement of young and middle-aged individuals in kidnapping, arms deals, illegal mining, and other acts of economic sabotage.
He said the CG directed the Special Squad to intensify investigations, identify all sponsors behind the criminal activities of the arrested suspects with a view to bring them to book, and ensure that suspects at large are apprehended and brought to book as well.
