The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has pledged full technical and operational backing to the Lagos State Government to ensure smooth rollout of the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS) across the state’s public service.
Managing Director/Chief Executive, Oluwaseun Falaye, gave the assurance in Lagos on Wednesday at a sensitisation workshop organised for Employee Relations Officers in Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
Falaye said the Fund would deploy its institutional capacity and experience to support the state at every stage of implementation, stressing that the scheme goes beyond compliance to safeguarding workers against occupational risks.
“We remain fully committed to supporting this process with the legal mandate, technical expertise and operational systems required for seamless implementation,” he said. “We will continue to work closely with all MDAs, providing guidance to ensure success.”
He described the workshop as a critical step in preparing officers who will drive the scheme, noting that their role is central to translating policy into action.
According to him, the ECS, established under the Employees’ Compensation Act, 2010, provides compensation for workplace injuries, occupational diseases, disabilities and death, as well as medical care and support for affected workers and their dependants.

“At its core, the scheme is a commitment that no worker or family will be left to bear the burden of work-related incidents alone,” Falaye said.
He added that Lagos already has strong administrative and payroll structures, noting that the focus should be on integrating the scheme into existing systems to enhance efficiency and impact.
“In a state where governance is fast-paced, the workforce remains the backbone of stability and progress. Strengthening their protection is both necessary and commendable,” he said.
Falaye explained that the training followed strategic engagements between the Fund and the state government, culminating in the decision to fully implement the ECS across the public service.
“When fully implemented, the scheme will deliver a more secure workforce, a proactive risk management system and a government that demonstrates practical commitment to workers’ welfare,” he added.
In his remarks, the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, said Lagos would once again set the pace in implementing the scheme nationwide.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office, Mrs Sunkanmi Oyegbola, Agoro assured that the state would drive the process to ensure workers benefit fully.
“Lagos, as the Centre of Excellence, will lead by example by ensuring effective implementation of the Employees’ Compensation Scheme,” he said.
He urged directors and heads of human resources across MDAs to take ownership of the process to guarantee smooth operation, adding that a dedicated NSITF desk office would be established to facilitate coordination.
The state also expressed optimism that the scheme would boost workers’ confidence, enabling them to perform their duties with greater commitment and peace of mind.
