The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his pipeline infrastructure review policy, describing it as a strategic step towards boosting oil production and driving economic recovery.
In a statement issued by its Rivers State Chairman, Bani Nwisabari, the council said the initiative reflects a responsive and people-centred leadership approach, noting that the policy would enhance national revenue through improved surveillance, broader stakeholder engagement and increased community participation.
The group highlighted key aspects of the reform, including the involvement of experienced operators, strengthened monitoring systems and greater collaboration with Host Community Development Committees (HOSCOMs), which it said would foster a sense of ownership among communities.
According to the NYCN, the decentralisation of pipeline security operations, particularly in the Niger Delta, demonstrates the administration’s willingness to address longstanding concerns of local communities, a move it said distinguishes Tinubu as a leader attentive to grassroots issues.
The council added that the initiative has strengthened its support for the President’s second-term bid in 2027.
Meanwhile, stakeholders and community leaders in Tombia, Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, have commended Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited for its role in securing oil and gas infrastructure in the region.
The firm, operated by former militant leader Government Ekpemupolo, was first awarded the pipeline surveillance contract in August 2022, with a renewal in 2024.
At an appraisal meeting held at the community’s town hall, youth leader Tarry Fayofori and other stakeholders described the company’s performance as effective, noting a significant reduction in oil theft and illegal refining activities since its engagement.
Community spokesman Dennis Philp said the company’s presence has contributed to increased national oil output and improved security across the region.
The stakeholders urged the Federal Government to sustain its contract with Tantita, describing its operations as one of the most successful interventions in protecting Nigeria’s critical oil infrastructure.
In the statement, the youths said, "We specially appreciate Mr. President for his pragmatic efforts in reviewing the issue of pipeline surveillance in the Niger Delta. This decision represents a welcome and progressive development. It underscores the fact that President Tinubu remains attentive to the genuine yearnings and aspirations of the people of the Niger Delta and is prepared to take decisive steps in the interest of fairness, equity, and sustainable peace in the region.
"Over the years, we have consistently raised concerns about the monopolisation of pipeline surveillance contracts by a limited number of actors. Our position has always been that such an arrangement undermines inclusivity and denies many competent and capable stakeholders the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the protection of critical national assets, and ultimately threatens the internal security architecture of host communities.
"We have continued to advocate for the decentralization of pipeline surveillance responsibilities, particularly in states such as Rivers, where numerous qualified and experienced youths possess the legal capacity, local knowledge, and commitment required to effectively safeguard oil and gas infrastructure.
"Broadening participation will not only promote fairness but will also strengthen community ownership, enhance intelligence gathering, and contribute to the long-term security of vital national assets.
"This quality of attentive and responsive leadership has earned the admiration of many young people across the Niger Delta and beyond. It reassures citizens that the highest office in the land remains accessible to the genuine concerns of the people.
"In the light of these developments, and in recognition of this commendable demonstration of leadership, we wish to state that in the coming days we shall be making a significant pronouncement, in our numbers, regarding the re-election of His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. Responsive leadership deserves acknowledgment, and President Tinubu has once again shown that he is a leader who not only governs but also listens. He deserves the support of all Nigerians.
"The subsequent intervention of Mr. President in reviewing this matter further strengthens our conviction that Nigeria currently benefits from a leadership that is willing to listen, reflect, and respond to legitimate concerns from across the federation."
Tombia community said: "“Since the Federal Government awarded the pipeline surveillance contract to Tantita, the difference has been clear across the Niger Delta.
“For many years, the Niger Delta suffered massive crude oil theft, illegal refining activities, and persistent pipeline vandalism that cost Nigeria billions in revenue. Today, we are witnessing a different realities in different spheres, including improved crude oil output, which was confirmed by NNPCL."
Acknowledging that other surveillance companies also operate in the sector, Philip emphasized that the structure, grassroots intelligence network, and deep community engagement introduced by Tompolo’s leadership have proven exceptional.
“The approach adopted by Tantita goes beyond surveillance. It involves the communities themselves. It empowers youths, discourages criminal activities, and builds local responsibility for protecting national assets,” he added.
He hailed the leadership of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the President has demonstrated a clear understanding of the strategic importance of peace and stability in the Niger Delta region.
“A leader must listen to constructive criticism, but he must also distinguish between genuine concerns and the voices of detractors whose interests may not align with national progress,” he said.
“The successes recorded under the current surveillance arrangement show that the President understands the important link between security, community participation, and economic recovery.” he said.
