...forum urges African unity to protect women, children in conflict zones

The Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) has recognised Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her contributions to the welfare of women and children, particularly her interventions in girl-child education and hygiene.

According to a statement issued by Special Assistant to The President on Media & ICT, Office of the Vice President, Kwapchi Bata Hamman, the honour was also in acknowledgement of her efforts in reducing maternal and child mortality, as well as providing welfare support for mothers and children across Nigeria.

Sen. Tinubu was represented at the event by the Wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Nana Shettima, who received the recognition at the 29th and 30th Ordinary General Assemblies of OAFLAD held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

OAFLAD, under its “We Are Equal” campaign, has continued to champion gender equality, women’s economic empowerment and access to education across Africa.

The forum also used the meeting to highlight the urgent need for stronger unity among African nations in addressing challenges facing women and children, especially those living in conflict areas across the continent.

Speaking at the assembly, the First Lady of Sierra Leone and Chairperson of OAFLAD, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, commended Sen. Tinubu’s role as a vocal advocate for initiatives aimed at promoting the wellbeing and advancement of women.

The First Lady of Ghana, Lordina Mahama, also praised Sen. Tinubu’s interventions, stressing the importance of investing in the education of the girl-child and supporting women artisans to build sustainable livelihoods.

Dr. Bio further emphasised the critical link between sustainable development and peace, noting that women’s rights cannot be fully realised in unstable environments.
