Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged student leaders to see leadership  as a duty to serve and uplift others.

A statement from the Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute(OOLI), Abeokuta, Ogun State, noted that he counselled  them on  ideal leadership during a four-day Students’ Leadership Training organised by the  Institute in partnership with the University of Lagos, held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Obasanjo said a  true leader must be an achiever and an actualizer, someone who turns vision into reality.

He urged them to embrace integrity, resilience and service in their  leadership endeavours.

“You must see leadership not as a privilege but as a duty to serve and uplift others. A true leader must be an achiever and an actualizer, someone who turns vision into reality,” he said.

He presented his renowned “55 Objectives of a True Leader,” highlighting attributes such as achiever, actualizer, analyzer, arranger, communicator, decision maker, encourager, enquirer, friend, and giver.

He further emphasised 15 Core Values of Good Leadership, including integrity, honesty, dependability, patriotism, orderliness, tolerance, trustworthiness, and peace.

She said: “We are deeply grateful to His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo for his legendary and monumental contribution to leadership development in Nigeria.

“This training has provided our student leaders with the tools and values required to lead responsibly in a rapidly changing world.”

She lauded the leadership of the institute, including the Director/Chief Executive Officer,  General Martin Luther Agwai(Retd)  and other members of the board, for organising the  programme.

The training featured an impressive lineup of facilitators drawn from academia, civil society, mental health, finance, law, business leadership, and transformational leadership development. Their sessions complemented Obasanjo’s keynote and provided practical, real-world tools for effective leadership.

The statement added that among the facilitators were Mrs Yemi Adamolekun, who spoke on responsible leadership and activism; Chief Executive Officer of Painless Universal UK, Lady Anne Welsh, who delivered a session on resilience and goal pursuit; and Prof. Adewale A. Olawoyin, SAN, who addressed participants on student constitutions and enabling laws.

“Other facilitators included Mrs Toki Mabogunje on leadership and communication; Mrs Oluwafunmilola Yetunde Adekunle on financial management and regulations; Uche Aderibigbe on emotional intelligence; Mr Nnaemeka Praise Ifeakor on financial literacy; Prof. S. Adedeji Daramola and Dr Deji Bolusemihi on 21st-century transformational leadership; and Mr Abolade Adeniyi Akinwunmi on professionalism and administrative leadership,” it added.

Participants also toured the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library and Olumo Rock as part of activities to enhance their historical and cultural understanding of leadership.
