Prominent opposition figures, including former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, held a strategic meeting at the residence of David Mark ahead of the national convention of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The closed-door session, which took place on Tuesday, focused on final preparations and coordination for the convention.

Other notable attendees included former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal, alongside party chieftains Naja’atu Mohammed and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

Photos and video clips from the meeting were shared on X by the CRA27 Advocacy Network, an organisation backing Amaechi’s political ambition, showing key leaders in discussions ahead of the convention.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that more than 3,000 delegates gathered at the Rainbow Event Centre in Garki, Abuja, for the convention. Delegates from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory were seen in colourful attire, reflecting the party’s diversity.

Security was tight at the venue, with thorough screening of delegates before entry, while accreditation was conducted under the supervision of a committee chaired by Austin Akobundu.

Speaking on the preparations, the party’s National Organising Secretary, Chinedu Idigo, expressed frustration over difficulties in securing a suitable venue, alleging that several private operators declined to host the event due to external pressure.

“We wrote to use the Eagle Square but received no response, and our request for the Velodrome was also denied without explanation,” he said.

He added that even venues initially secured attempted to withdraw after alleged threats, forcing the party to insist on proceeding after making payments.

Idigo noted that the convention is expected to conclude the party’s congresses, ratify a new constitution, and lay the groundwork for future party primaries.
